Gluek's Stite Malt Liquor Small Can

Gluek's Stite 8 oz Malt Liquor Can

The Gluek's Stite Malt Liquor Small Can is an 8-ounce collectible container produced by the historic Gluek Brewing Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Founded in 1857 by German immigrant Gottlieb Gluek, the brewery was a cornerstone of Upper Midwest brewing heritage and established Stite as one of the regional market's prominent malt liquor labels.

Historical Context

Gluek introduced the Stite brand during the 1940s to offer a robust malt liquor option. Because malt liquors were formulated with a higher alcohol by volume than standard lagers, breweries frequently packaged them in smaller 8-ounce cans—often categorized by collectors as "odd-size" or "pony" cans. This smaller serving size became a signature format for the Stite line in the mid-20th century.

Graphic Design and Labeling

The face of the can features bold typography highlighting the "Stite" trademark, accompanied by the Gluek Brewing Company signature branding and malt liquor designation. The visual layout incorporates clean metallic accents, contrasting color bands, and mandatory tax and brewery information.

Production Variations

Collectors recognize variations across different production runs of this small can. These differences primarily appear in state-specific mandatory text, variations in alcohol content statements along the upper or lower rims, and minor adjustments in the distributor and brewery address lines as packaging regulations evolved.

Breweriana Significance

Following the sale and eventual closure of the original Minneapolis brewery site in the 1960s, rights to the Stite brand changed hands multiple times, with subsequent versions canned in different facilities. As a result, small cans bearing the original Minneapolis, Minnesota municipality label remain enduring collector favorites representing the independent era of Minneapolis brewing history.
