Goebel Extra Dry Beer Flat Top Can

Detroit's Goebel Extra Dry Can

The Goebel Extra Dry Beer flat top can is an iconic piece of Michigan breweriana produced by the historic Goebel Brewing Company of Detroit. Founded in 1873 by Prussian immigrant and Civil War veteran August Goebel alongside partner Theodore Gorenflo, the brewery operated out of its central facility at Rivard and Maple streets and expanded to become one of the premier brewing institutions in Detroit.

Design and Lithography

The can showcases classic mid-century graphic design dominated by the distinctive Goebel script and bold "Extra Dry" labeling. The lithography prominently incorporates traditional heraldry and echoes the brewery's famous slogans, including "Naturally Famous" and references to their aging process in cypress casks. Certain production runs also included factory vanity top lids stamped with the official Goebel emblem.

Variations and Manufacturing

Manufactured primarily in partnership with the American Can Company, this can was produced across multiple runs that display several variations. Collectors identify differences in metallic paint shading, adjustments in patent text along the seam, and modifications in mandatory brewery legal statements. Because Goebel eventually expanded operations with an additional plant in Oakland, California, cans bearing strictly the original Detroit, Michigan address hold particular appeal for Midwest regional collections.

Cultural Legacy

During the era of this can's production, Goebel maintained massive regional prominence through extensive advertising campaigns, including high-profile sponsorships of Detroit Tigers baseball broadcasts. This visibility made the Goebel Extra Dry can a staple of Michigan brewing heritage and an enduring favorite for collectors of mid-century breweriana.
