Goebel Genuine Bock Flat Top Can

Oakland's Goebel Genuine Bock Can

The Goebel Genuine Bock flat top represents a notable chapter in the post-war West Coast expansion of the Goebel Brewing Company. Following Goebel's acquisition of the Golden West Brewing Company in Oakland, California, the brewery utilized the facility to produce and distribute its seasonal and flagship offerings across western markets.

Graphic Design and Visual Elements

The can features the traditional goat head motif commonly associated with American bock beers. Set against a clean, light background, the front face highlights bold, contrasting typography announcing "Genuine Bock" alongside the iconic Goebel branding. The mandatory text identifies the location as Goebel Brewing Co. of California in Oakland, serving as the key visual differentiator from cans filled at the primary Midwestern plants.

Collector Significance

Bock cans sourced from regional branch facilities remain highly desirable among breweriana enthusiasts. Because Goebel operated the Oakland plant for only a brief period during the 1950s before shuttering West Coast production, cans carrying the Oakland mandatory are particularly popular among collectors focusing on California breweriana and seasonal bocks. Variations exist across production runs from different Goebel plants, showing subtle differences in mandatory text placement, manufacturer marks, and canning codes.
