Goebel Private Stock 22 Beer Flat Top Can

Goebel Private Stock 22 Flat Top

The Goebel Private Stock 22 Beer Flat Top Can was produced by the Goebel Brewing Company of Detroit, Michigan, one of the most prominent regional brewing powerhouses in the American Midwest. Situated on Rivard Street directly opposite its fierce cross-town competitor, Stroh Brewery Company, Goebel achieved massive market success and widespread name recognition throughout the Great Lakes region through high-profile sponsorships of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions.

The "Private Stock 22" designation served as Goebel's flagship label during a period of significant commercial growth. The can's graphic layout prominently displays the recognizable Goebel script, the distinctive "22" identifier, and the company's signature marketing slogan touting beer brewed with "Crystilled Water". The brand's imagery is also closely tied to the era when the company popularized its well-known mascot, Brewster Rooster.

From a collector's standpoint, this container is noteworthy due to the geographical expansion of Goebel's canning operations. To meet growing demand, the company broadened packaging beyond its primary Detroit facility to include satellite plants in Muskegon, Michigan, and Oakland, California. Consequently, variations exist with different city listings, mandatory legal text, and canning company liner trademarks. These manufacturing differences make the can a core staple among Michigan breweriana and mid-century advertising collections.
