Goetz Pale Near Beer Cone Top Can

Goetz Pale Near Beer Overview

The Goetz Pale Near Beer cone top can was produced by the M. K. Goetz Brewing Company of St. Joseph, Missouri. Founded in 1859 by German immigrant Michael Karl Goetz, the brewery grew from a modest local operation along Blacksnake Creek into one of the most prominent regional brewing operations in the Midwest.

During the Prohibition era, M. K. Goetz survived the nationwide ban on intoxicating liquor by shifting production to non-alcoholic near beers and cereal beverages. This strategy preserved the facility's equipment and distribution networks, allowing the company to thrive long after repeal. The brewery continued to produce and can its Goetz Pale near beer formulation to serve market demand for non-alcoholic malt beverages.

The can features classic mid-century typography and labeling that designates the product as a near beer and cereal beverage produced at the St. Joseph facility. Variations exist across different manufacturing runs, featuring slight changes in mandatory factory text, tax phrasing, and color details.

M. K. Goetz operated independently at its historic 6th and Albemarle Street location until merging with the Pearl Brewing Company in 1961, with operations at the St. Joseph site ultimately concluding in 1976. Today, non-alcoholic cone top cans such as the Goetz Pale Near Beer are sought-after artifacts highlighting the adaptation and heritage of Missouri brewing.
