Gold Medal Select Beer 12 Oz Zip/Tab Top Can

Gold Medal Select Beer Can

The Gold Medal Select Beer 12 oz can represents a significant piece of Northeastern Pennsylvania breweriana, produced under the Gold Medal Brewing Company name in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. The brand name originated from the historic accolades earned by the city's legendary Stegmaier Brewing Company, which was awarded international gold medals at major European brewing expositions in cities such as Rome, Brussels, and Paris in the early 20th century.

Design and Collector Noteworthiness

To market distinct beer lines and satisfy different regional distribution networks, Stegmaier operated under various associated names, including the Gold Medal Brewing Company entity printed directly on this can. The graphic presentation incorporates bold typography alongside crest and medal motifs, reflecting mid-century regional can art that promoted local industrial pride in the Wyoming Valley brewing scene.

Known Variations

Among breweriana collectors, several variations of the Gold Medal Select can are documented. These variations include subtle shifts in the mandatory brewery legal text, differences in enamel versus metallic paint finishes, and minor print-run lithography shifts across different canning lines.
