Goldcrest 51 Premium Beer Flat Top Can

Goldcrest 51: Chicago Lederer Can

The Goldcrest 51 Premium Beer Flat Top Can represents a notable chapter in mid-century American regional brewing, issued under the banner of the Lederer Brewing Company of Chicago, Illinois. Closely associated with the Lederer family's broader brewing enterprise—most prominently known through their Chicago operations at the Atlantic Brewing Company facility on West 38th Street—this can illustrates the era of multifaceted brand portfolios and specialized regional distribution.

Background and Regional Presence

While the Goldcrest brand originally built its fame in the South with the Tennessee Brewing Company—where the "51" celebrated a milestone anniversary in the brewing business—the brand name was also packaged in Chicago under the Lederer label. This established a distinct Midwestern presence for the brand, catering to local and surrounding urban markets during the height of the flat top can era.

Aesthetics and Collector Interest

The can features bold mid-century breweriana graphics, characterized by the prominent Goldcrest emblem, clean period typography, and a striking color scheme incorporating metallic gold, deep red, and crisp white accents. Because Lederer operated at a considerably smaller production volume compared to the national macro-breweries of the period, cans bearing the Chicago, IL Lederer mandatory statement are highly sought after by collectors specializing in Illinois and Midwestern brewing history.

Across different production batches, collectors have identified variations involving seam marks, mandatory text layout, and minor adjustments in the crest rendering, making the can a staple of interest in regional flat top collections.
