Golden Stein Eastern Premium Beer Flat Top Can

Schoenhofen Golden Stein Can

The Golden Stein Eastern Premium Beer flat top can represents a notable piece of Chicago brewing history produced by the Schoenhofen Edelweiss Brewing Company. While the Golden Stein label was also packaged under the Drewrys banner in South Bend, Indiana, the Schoenhofen Edelweiss Chicago version is particularly sought after by breweriana collectors due to its relative scarcity.

Historical Context

The Schoenhofen Edelweiss Brewing Company operated out of Chicago's historic Pilsen neighborhood, a stronghold of immigrant brewing tradition originally established in the nineteenth century by Peter Schoenhofen. Known nationally for its flagship Edelweiss label and soft drinks like Green River, the brewery maintained an extensive portfolio of regional and secondary labels, including Golden Stein Eastern Premium Beer. Following post-war industry shifts and corporate realignment with Drewrys Ltd., these Chicago-labeled cans became commemorative relics marking the final decades of packaging at the historic Canalport Avenue facility.

Graphic Design and Can Attributes

The face of the can features an ornate golden beer stein set against bold, clean typography displaying the "Eastern Premium Beer" designation. Its striking metallic palette and classic tavern-themed motif make it a prominent display piece on Midwestern collector shelves.

Collector Notes and Variations

Breweriana collectors pay close attention to the mandatory Chicago brewery text on the side panels to differentiate this release from later out-of-state issues. Variations exist across different production batches, particularly in subtle text placement and can manufacturer markings. Because far fewer examples bearing the Schoenhofen Edelweiss imprint were preserved compared to other contemporary labels, this can remains a prized highlight for collections centered on Illinois brewing heritage.
