Premium Draft Gallon stands as a prominent West Coast example of this packaging trend. Fabricated as a 128-ounce large-format can, it features prominent instructions along the top rim, including "KEEP REFRIGERATED" flanked by red directional arrows indicating "THIS END UP," reflecting the unpasteurized nature of draft beer packaged in gallon cans. Originally established in Santa Rosa, California, Grace Brothers Brewing was celebrated for regional staples like Grace Bros. Bavarian and GB beers. When market pressures shifted regional brewing in the 1960s, the brand was acquired by industrialist Joseph Kalmanovitz, who transferred production to his Los Angeles facilities and introduced the label in bulk-volume gallon cans to satisfy party and family gatherings.

Maier Brewing Company, which produced this can in Los Angeles, traced its origins back to 1875 when German immigrants Joseph Maier and George Zobelein founded the operation. Surviving Prohibition through near-beer and ice production, Maier rebuilt its operations in downtown Los Angeles and achieved major post-war popularity with its flagship Brew 102. Following Kalmanovitz's takeover in 1958, Maier increasingly focused on value-oriented regional brands and diverse contract packing before the Los Angeles plant finally ceased operations in the early 1970s.
