Great Lakes Premium Beer Flat Top Can

Great Lakes Beer by Drewrys Ltd.

Drewrys Ltd. U.S.A., Inc., operating out of South Bend, Indiana, produced the Great Lakes Premium Beer flat top as part of its regional expansion and brand portfolio across the Midwest. Drewrys expanded its market footprint significantly by acquiring regional brewing entities, including Chicago's Schoenhofen Edelweiss Brewing Company. Following these consolidations, Drewrys utilized various secondary labels and distribution divisions, making Great Lakes Premium Beer an intriguing artifact of mid-century brewing history.

The visual design of the can is defined by its regional cartographic theme. The main graphic showcases a stylized depiction of the Great Lakes basin, highlighting the geographic landmarks of the region. Framed by crisp typography and bold commercial art, the design anchored the beverage directly to its heartland consumer base.

For breweriana collectors, this can presents notable historical details reflecting Drewrys’ multi-city operations and packaging arrangements. Known variations feature changes in mandatory brewery text—some crediting Drewrys Ltd. in South Bend directly, while others reference distribution by the Schoenhofen Edelweiss division in Chicago. Packaging variations also include different can manufacturer stamps, such as markings from the Continental Can Company.

Because of its focused regional distribution and its connection to the shifting corporate landscape of Midwestern brewing, this flat top remains a popular piece among collectors specializing in Great Lakes and Indiana breweriana.
