Grenay Malt Lager 12 Oz Zip/Tab Top Can

Grenay Malt Lager Can History

The Grenay Malt Lager 12 Oz Zip/Tab Top Can is a notable mid-Atlantic breweriana item connected to the brewing heritage of Norfolk, Virginia. Labeled under the Grenay Brewing Co. name, the brand was produced at the historic Washington Avenue facility in Norfolk, a site that operated across several eras under entities including Century Brewing and the Champale brewing network.

Background and Breweriana Significance

During its era of regional beverage production, the Norfolk plant introduced the Grenay label alongside its broader portfolio of malt beverages and regional lagers. While other regional offerings from the same facility carried the Century or Champale designations directly on the label face, this can notably highlights the distinct "Grenay Brewing Co." branding.

Label Attributes and Known Variations

The can design features bold, mid-century graphic styling centered around clear typography and high-contrast color blocking. Collectors have documented variations across production runs, particularly regarding the brewery mandatory text printed along the seam line, where some labels display alternate corporate listings associated with Century Brewery Corp. The can remains a prized artifact representing the evolution of canned malt lagers in Virginia's commercial brewing history.
