Gretz Beer Flat Top Can

Philadelphia's Gretz Flat Top

Produced by the Wm. Gretz Brewing Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Gretz Beer flat top represents a celebrated chapter in mid-century mid-Atlantic breweriana. Located in the Kensington neighborhood at Germantown Avenue and Oxford Street, the brewery was one of Philadelphia's standout regional producers, known for bold marketing campaigns and fierce competition against national brewing giants.

Gretz was an early and aggressive adopter of canned beer packaging, a strategy that helped the local brewery outlast many competitors and outsell major national brands in the local packaged market during its peak years. The can's graphics reflect the brewery's strong brand identity, which was heavily promoted across Philadelphia via animated outdoor billboards featuring a cyclist on an antique high-wheel bicycle, paired with their slogan, "Made the old-fashioned way… slowly… naturally". Gretz also made regional broadcast history by sponsoring early television programming, including The Gretz Cavalcade of Girls.

For collectors of Pennsylvania breweriana, Gretz flat tops are enduringly desirable artifacts of Philadelphia's brewing heritage. Documented variations among these cans showcase differences in canning manufacturer marks, side-panel copy, and mandatory text formatting across production runs.
