Gretz Beer Flat Top Can

Gretz G.B. Fleet Car Alfa Romeo

This 12-ounce flat top can represents an entry from the Wm. Gretz Brewing Company's celebrated late-1950s "G.B. Fleet Car" set. The central display panel features a stylized line illustration of an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider occupied by two smiling gentlemen, with the passenger waving from the open cockpit. Above the vehicle, factory specifications note it as a "4 cyl. 1290 c.c. 65 b.h.p." model. A sweeping metallic ribbon frames the automotive graphic alongside the brewery's pointed advertising slogan: "Sparkling proof that finer beer comes from the smaller brewery."

Gretz positioned its flagship beer around regional pride and localized craftsmanship, framing smaller-scale brewing as inherently superior to mass-market industrial lagers. The "G.B. Fleet Car" campaign centered on a real fleet of stylish sports cars and compact vehicles emblazoned with brewery door emblems and driven by sales representatives across the Philadelphia market. Gretz reinforced this visibility through newspaper features, animated billboards, and sponsorships of local broadcast television.

The William Gretz Brewing Company traced its heritage to nineteenth-century brewing operations in Philadelphia's Kensington neighborhood along Germantown Avenue. After weathering Prohibition, the enterprise reorganized in 1933 as the William Gretz Brewing Company. In the post-repeal and post-war years, Gretz emerged as one of Philadelphia's top-selling regional producers through early adoption of canned beer packaging and memorable promotional campaigns. However, the aggressive national expansion and price consolidation of larger macro-breweries eroded regional sales margins, leading the brewery to cease production in 1960.

Among breweriana enthusiasts, the Gretz Fleet Car cans are widely recognized as quintessential artifacts of late-1950s graphic packaging. The direct intersection of vintage automotive styling and classic mid-century flat top can design ensures that entries from this series remain highlights of Pennsylvania brewing history.
