Gretz Beer Flat Top Can

Gretz Beer Flat Top History

Produced by the William Gretz Brewing Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Gretz Beer flat top represents a standout piece of East Coast brewing history. Located in Philadelphia's Kensington neighborhood along Germantown Avenue, Wm. Gretz was one of the city's quintessential regional breweries, maintaining a strong independent presence throughout the mid-twentieth century.

The graphics of the Gretz Beer can prominently showcase the brand's bold typography alongside the brewery's famous slogan, "Made the Old Fashioned Way… Slowly… Naturally". The packaging is recognized for its crisp color blocks and sharp industrial lithography, frequently utilizing vivid yellows, deep blues, and metallic accents. The brewery often integrated nostalgic motifs into its identity, including its high-wheel bicycle rider emblem.

Beyond standard releases, the Gretz brand is celebrated among collectors for creative promotional runs. Most notably, the brewery produced a sports car series where cans featured illustrations of compact sports cars, using the vehicle motif to symbolize the agility and dedicated focus of a smaller regional brewery. The brand also issued illustrated editions such as the "Tooner Schooner" can.

Collectors document various design variations across the Gretz flat top run. These include subtle shifts in mandatory text formatting, differing metallic background shades, and variations in state tax stamp placements on the lids. Later production runs also reflect co-packaging and contract arrangements with neighboring Philadelphia brewer Esslinger's. Today, these cans remain central artifacts of Pennsylvania's rich brewing heritage.
