Gretz Tooner Schooner Beer Flat Top Can

Philadelphia's Sing-Along Set Can

Produced by the Wm. Gretz Brewing Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Gretz Tooner Schooner represents one of the most inventive packaging promotions in American breweriana. The brand concept was built around a lighthearted pun combining musical "tunes" with beer "schooners," drawing inspiration from author Mary Lasswell's popular comedic novel Tooner Schooner, which celebrated mid-century tavern culture.

Rather than relying strictly on standard commercial graphics, the Tooner Schooner line adopted a nostalgic sing-along theme. Each can featured the printed lyrics of a traditional American parlor or vaudeville song, framed alongside whimsical cartoon illustrations that reflected the melody's subject. Featured songs across the run included favorites such as "Casey Jones" (illustrated with cartoon locomotives), "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," "After the Ball," "In the Good Old Summertime," and "Everybody Works But Father."

As a regional brewer competing against large national shipping breweries, Wm. Gretz utilized clever thematic packaging to stand out on retail shelves and encourage brand loyalty. Designed as interactive party cans, they were intended for lively social gatherings where patrons could assemble multiple songs and sing along around the table.

Today, the Tooner Schooner series is highly sought after by breweriana collectors. Several distinct song titles, lyrical arrangements, and background color variations were manufactured during its run, making the pursuit of a full set a popular collecting goal.
