Gretz Tooner Schooner Beer Flat Top Can

The Gretz Tooner Schooner Set

The Gretz Tooner Schooner beer can is one of the most distinctive graphic releases produced by the Wm. Gretz Brewing Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Created as part of an inventive promotional campaign, the "Tooner Schooner" line playfully fused musical nostalgia with beer packaging, building on a pun between a musical "tune" and a traditional beer "schooner".

Rather than featuring standard commercial labeling, cans in the Tooner Schooner series showcased complete lyrics and lively cartoon illustrations inspired by popular American song standards. Notable songs featured across the set include classics such as "Casey Jones," "After the Ball," "Let Me Call You Sweetheart," "Hello! Ma Baby," and "Everybody Works but Father". The artwork embraced a nostalgic aesthetic with colorful caricatures, steam locomotives, and period attire.

Wm. Gretz was widely recognized as a prominent regional packaging innovator in the Philadelphia market, utilizing novel advertising campaigns to compete against major national breweries. The Tooner Schooner concept served as a collectible series that encouraged consumers to assemble the full assortment of songs. Various song titles and lyrical design variations exist across the series, making these cans prized display pieces among breweriana collectors.
