Gretz Tooner Schooner Beer Flat Top Can

Philadelphia Musical Set Cans

The Gretz Tooner Schooner Beer Flat Top Can was produced by the Wm. Gretz Brewing Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Highly sought after among breweriana enthusiasts, this can was issued as part of a creative promotional series centered around tavern sing-alongs and community music.

The Musical Theme and Set

The William Gretz Brewing Company developed the Tooner Schooner series as a thematic set. Playing on the words "tune" and "schooner" (a traditional beer glass), each can in the series spotlights barbershop-style musical nostalgia. The front and sides feature cartoon-style illustrations alongside classic song titles and accompanying lyrics. Well-known song themes depicted in the series include titles such as "After the Ball," "I Want a Girl," "Everybody Works," and "Lovelight Glowing".

Variations and Collector Appeal

Breweriana collectors place high value on assembling the various song designs within the run, as each offers distinct lyrics and artistic vignettes. In addition to the different featured tunes, collectors track minor variations in mandatory text, panel layouts, and graphic placements across different printings. Because hobbyists frequently aim to build complete runs featuring every recorded song variation, individual examples from the Tooner Schooner series remain standout centerpieces of Philadelphia brewing history.
