Gretz Tooner Schooner Beer Flat Top Can

Philadelphia's Musical Set Can

The Gretz Tooner Schooner can was produced by the Wm. Gretz Brewing Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as part of an inventive promotional campaign. Designed around a playful pun combining musical "tunes" with beer "schooners," the line drew cultural inspiration from author Mary Lasswell's popular comedic novel Tooner Schooner, whose beer-loving characters resonated widely with mid-century tavern culture.

Rather than carrying standard commercial branding, the Tooner Schooner series embraced a nostalgic "Gay Nineties" aesthetic. Each can showcases printed lyrics from traditional American sing-along melodies accompanied by bright, colorful cartoon caricatures directly reflecting the theme of the song. Featured selections across the series include memorable favorites such as Casey Jones (illustrated with cartoon steam locomotives), Take Me Out to the Ball Game, After the Ball, Everybody Works But Father, Let Me Call You Sweetheart, and In the Good Old Summertime.

As a regional brewer competing against large national shipping breweries, Wm. Gretz relied on creative packaging concepts to command shelf space and build local brand loyalty throughout eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and neighboring markets. The sing-along set encouraged consumers to purchase multiple cans in order to assemble the various tunes for social gatherings.

Today, the Tooner Schooner line stands as one of the most celebrated mid-century thematic releases in American breweriana. Collectors actively pursue the assortment of different song titles, background color shifts, and lyrical layout variations that were released during its manufacturing run.
