Haffenreffer Lager Beer 12 Oz Zip/Tab Top Can

Boston's Haffenreffer Lager Can

The Haffenreffer Lager Beer 12 Oz Zip/Tab Top Can is an emblematic mid-century artifact produced by Haffenreffer & Co. in Boston, Massachusetts. Operating from the Boylston Brewery complex in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood, Haffenreffer was one of New England's most recognizable independent breweries.

Brewery Background

Founded by German immigrant Rudolph Frederick Haffenreffer, the brewery operated through multiple generations of family leadership. When national brewing conglomerates began dominating post-Prohibition distribution, Haffenreffer transitioned its packaged line to modern self-opening containers to stay competitive in the retail market. Following the closure of the Jamaica Plain plant, which temporarily left Massachusetts without an operating commercial brewery, the brand rights and canning operations were acquired by the Narragansett Brewing Company.

Graphic Design and Visuals

The can showcases Haffenreffer's classic brand presentation, characterized by a metallic silver and blue palette accented by clean typography and bold script. The face of the can prominently features the Haffenreffer name alongside the heritage slogan, "Brewers Since 1870." The composition balances traditional Bavarian-inspired crest motifs with clean mid-century layout standards.

Manufacturing and Variations

Cans for this label were produced by leading manufacturers of the era, such as the American Can Company. Known variations exist across different manufacturing runs, featuring slight shifts in mandatory text placement, manufacturer canning codes, and metallic sheen differences on the body.
