Hals Premium Beer Flat Top Can

Hals Premium Beer History

Introduced in 1952, Hals Premium Beer was produced by the Globe Brewing Company of Baltimore, Maryland, operating under the assumed business name Hals Brewing Co. Globe Brewing, widely recognized for its flagship Arrow Beer, launched the Hals label in the post-war era as a specialized regional offering across the Mid-Atlantic market.

Fine Art Imagery

The centerpiece of the Hals Premium Beer can design is an adaptation of The Laughing Cavalier, the 1624 portrait by Dutch master painter Frans Hals. The brewery derived the brand's name directly from the painter and featured the cavalier's portrait prominently on the label face, creating one of the most distinctive fine-art adaptations found on mid-century American cans.

Regional Promotion and Sports Sponsorship

To promote the new brand, Globe Brewing orchestrated an extensive multi-media advertising campaign across Maryland and Washington, D.C. Among its notable promotions, Hals sponsored television broadcasts for the NBA's Baltimore Bullets, connecting the local brewery with mid-century sports entertainment.

Production Characteristics

Manufactured by the American Can Company using their patented "Keglined" process, the standard 12-ounce container was distributed to taverns and retailers throughout the region. Known variations exist among collectors, distinguished by subtle differences in mandatory text and manufacturer markings.
