Hamm's Beer Flat Top Can

St. Paul's Iconic Flat Top Legacy

The Theo. Hamm Brewing Company of Saint Paul, Minnesota, holds a distinguished place in breweriana history. When metal container technology transformed the brewing landscape, Theodore Hamm’s operation took a distinct operational route: it was the only brewery in Minnesota to bypass cone top packaging entirely, instead investing in retooling its packaging lines directly for flat top containers.

The can design prominently highlights the classic Hamm's script alongside the brewery's heritage crest and celebrated regional slogan, "From the Land of Sky Blue Waters". Sourced across major container manufacturers—principally the American Can Company featuring their "Keglined" interior coating, as well as the Continental Can Company—the can showcases vivid lithography with metallic gold accents, deep blues, and bold white lettering.

For breweriana historians and can enthusiasts, this can features multiple documented variations. Shifts across manufacturing runs reflect evolving regulatory mandates, including iterations bearing Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statements alongside non-IRTP releases. Other noticeable variations include differences in manufacturer plant codes, lid stampings, mandatory legal text placement, and minor refinements to the crest framing. Supported by aggressive mid-century marketing and the brand's rapid regional growth, this flat top became one of the quintessential symbols of Midwestern brewing history.
