Hamm's Preferred Stock Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Hamm's Preferred Stock Tab Top

The Hamm's Preferred Stock Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can was produced by the historic Theo. Hamm Brewing Company of St. Paul, Minnesota. Carrying the storied "Preferred Stock" nameplate, this label represented the brewery's premium portfolio line, complementing their flagship Northwoods branding with distinct heraldic accents and regal styling.

Design & Heritage

Originating from the landmark Hamm's brewery along Phalen Creek, the can features the classic corporate identity that helped define Upper Midwest breweriana. The label design prominently highlights the traditional Hamm's crest alongside bold typography proclaiming "Preferred Stock Beer," paired with St. Paul mandatory text along the side seam.

Collector Variations & Highlights

Breweriana collectors pay close attention to several manufacturing and textual variations found across production runs of this can. Differences exist regarding side seam structure, can metal construction, and variations in mandatory text alignment, including examples where the text spans from rim to rim.

One particularly famous and sought-after variation includes the designation "STRONG BEER" printed directly on the face of the can rather than stamped onto the top lid. This variation was produced for select regional markets, such as North Dakota, to comply with local alcohol labeling regulations, making it a prized piece for regional and label collectors alike.

Additionally, the can serves as an important bridge into the transition era of American brewing history, documenting the eventual shift in plant management when the St. Paul facilities were acquired by the Olympia Brewing Company.
