Hamm's Real Draft 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Hamm's Real Draft 12 Oz Can

The Hamm's Real Draft 12 Oz Tab Top Can was produced by the Theo. Hamm Brewing Company out of St. Paul, Minnesota. Introduced as part of the industry-wide movement to bring tavern-style draft beer into packaged retail convenience, the Real Draft label served as a prominent line extension of the historic Minnesota brewery.

Background and Graphic Design

Hailing from the Theodore Hamm facility along Phalen Creek in St. Paul, this container features the recognizable brand identity that made Hamm's a household name across the United States. The label pairs traditional Theo. Hamm crown crests and mid-century typography with bold draft designations and the famous slogan, "From the Land of Sky Blue Waters". The packaging design highlights the brewery's shift toward modern can-making technologies, appearing in both seamless all-aluminum and straight-steel formats with specialized lid lithography.

Collector Notes and Variations

For breweriana collectors, cans bearing the St. Paul mandatory statement carry strong regional appeal, connecting the can directly to the company's primary headquarters rather than its branch plants in cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, or Houston.

Variations exist across manufacturing runs. Documented differences include side-panel mandatory text formatting, top chime crimp styles, can body composition, and lid markings—such as variations with unpainted lids versus printed lithography promoting seamless aluminum construction. These manufacturing differences make the can a classic staple for collectors chronicling Upper Midwest brewing heritage.
