Hampden Dry Lager Beer Flat Top Can

Hampden Dry Lager Flat Top Can

The Hampden Dry Lager Beer flat top represents a classic piece of New England breweriana, originating from the Hampden Brewing Company in the Willimansett neighborhood of Chicopee, Massachusetts. Willimansett was an industrial community along the Connecticut River, and Hampden stood as the prominent local brewery of the Pioneer Valley.

Graphic Design and Manufacture

The can showcases crisp mid-century graphic design characterized by bold typography, prominent Hampden branding, and rich contrasting colors complemented by metallic accents. Fabricated by the American Can Company, the container reflects the lithographic style typical of the post-Prohibition regional brewing era.

Variations and Collector Interest

Among New England breweriana enthusiasts, this flat top is an enduring staple. Known variations exist across different manufacturing runs. These variations include differences in mandatory text placement—such as contents and brewery identification appearing on the face versus the side—as well as metallic trim differences across canning batches.

Historical Context

Hampden Brewing Company maintained deep roots in Western Massachusetts before its later corporate transition into Hampden-Harvard Breweries and its eventual acquisition by Piel Bros. As a relic of Willimansett brewing heritage, the can represents the rich tradition of independent regional packaging in the Northeast.
