Hampden Mild Ale Flat Top Can

Hampden Mild Ale from Willimansett

Produced by the Hampden Brewing Company of Willimansett, Massachusetts, this 12-ounce flat top can represents a classic piece of mid-century New England brewing history. Operating in Chicopee's Willimansett neighborhood, Hampden was a regional staple throughout the Connecticut River Valley and neighboring northeastern markets.

The can features an eye-catching green background anchored by a central pink, scalloped oval medallion. Inside the medallion, arched orange lettering spells out HAMPDEN above an illustrated stemmed chalice of golden ale, accompanied below by bold block lettering for MILD ALE.

Directly beneath the central insignia is the brewery's trademark slogan, "SMILD BUT STURDY!"—a playful pun on the words "smile" and "mild" that was a centerpiece of Hampden's promotional campaigns, tavern signage, and breweriana during this era. Encircling the upper rim of the pink oval are the mandatory statements reading "CONTENTS 12 FLUID OUNCES," "PACKED AT THE BREWERY," and "INTERNAL REVENUE TAX PAID," reflecting the regulatory requirements of its period.

Hampden produced its Mild Ale alongside lagers, porters, and ales, marketing it as an approachable yet hearty New England favorite. Variations of this label exist across different production runs, with minor adjustments in mandatory phrasing and manufacturer notations over time.
