Hanley Extra Dry Lager Beer Flat Top Can

Hanley Extra Dry Lager Can

The Hanley Extra Dry Lager Beer Flat Top Can represents a notable era of mid-century brewing in Providence, Rhode Island, produced by The James Hanley Company. Originating from the historic Jackson Street facility, this can highlights the brewery's transition and expansion from its famous regional ales into the burgeoning lager beer market.

Brewery Heritage

The James Hanley Company was established by James Hanley, an Irish immigrant who arrived in America during the Great Famine and went on to build one of New England's most recognizable brewing operations. Hanley was known not only for his brewing enterprise but also for his prize-winning draught horses, which became a cornerstone of the company's regional identity and marketing parades across Providence. Following Prohibition, the brewery resumed operations and adapted to modern packaging trends to stay competitive alongside neighboring Rhode Island breweries.

Label Design and Variations

The can features bold typography showcasing the Hanley name alongside the Extra Dry Lager designation. The design embraced clean, striking lines intended to stand out on retail shelves and behind bar taps. Collectors note that variations of this label exist across different production batches, showing subtle differences in text arrangement, mandatory statements, and manufacturing marks.

Breweriana Significance

Among collectors of New England breweriana, cans from The James Hanley Company are prized artifacts representing Providence's rich industrial brewing history. While the brewery eventually closed its doors in the late 1950s, cans bearing the Hanley brand remain celebrated centerpieces of Rhode Island's regional canning legacy.
