Harvard Ale Flat Top Can

Harvard Ale Flat Top History

Produced by the Harvard Brewing Company of Lowell, Massachusetts, the Harvard Ale flat top can represents a classic chapter in New England's regional brewing legacy. Originally founded in the late nineteenth century as the Consumers Brewing Company before rebranding to Harvard Brewing Company, the Lowell operation grew into one of the largest brewing plants in New England. The brewery survived the Prohibition era—despite being the site of one of the region's largest and most famous Prohibition raids in 1925—and resumed operations to supply the Northeast with its popular ales.

For breweriana enthusiasts, the Harvard Ale can stands out for its bold mid-century typography and distinct regional branding. Collectors document several variations across its production history. Earlier releases feature opening instruction panels along the side, while subsequent runs phased out instructional text as canned beverages became commonplace. Side-panel text also shows notable diversity; while many examples bear American Can Company's standard "Keglined" trademark, tougher-to-find variations replace this with regional slogans such as "A Real New England Beer". Other variations across different production runs incorporate phrases like "Fully Aged" and "Foam Fresh".

Due to Harvard Brewing Company’s strong New England presence prior to its closure in the mid-1950s, this flat top remains a celebrated staple among East Coast breweriana collectors and regional historians alike.
