Heidel-brau Premium Quality Light Beer Flat Top Can

Heidel-brau Light Beer Flat Top

The Heidel-brau Premium Quality Light Beer flat top represents a major chapter in Iowa's brewing heritage. Canned by the Sioux City Brewing Company in Sioux City, Iowa, Heidel-brau served as the brewery's primary flagship label alongside Western Brew.

Historical Context

Operating out of the facility at West 1st and Isabella Streets—originally established before Prohibition by the Inter-State Brewing Company—the post-Prohibition Sioux City Brewing Company grew to become Iowa's largest brewing operation. The brewery enjoyed broad regional distribution, making Heidel-brau a prominent household staple across grocery stores and regional retailers throughout the Upper Midwest.

Brand Evolution and Transition

Due to the widespread popularity of the brand, the company eventually adopted the name Heidel Brau Brewing Company while maintaining operations at the Sioux City plant. The facility changed ownership in 1959 when it was acquired by Wisconsin-based Kingsbury Brewing Company. Shortly thereafter, the Sioux City plant closed, and the brand rights were purchased by the G. Heileman Brewing Company, which transferred canning and distribution to Wisconsin.

Collector Notes and Variations

Among breweriana collectors, cans bearing the original Sioux City, Iowa mandatory statement hold significant interest compared to later versions canned out of Wisconsin. Several variations exist across production runs, featuring subtle differences in canning text, alcohol content statements, corporate name designations, and layout details along the seam.
