Heidelberg Beer Flat Top Can

Tacoma's Heidelberg Flat Top

The Heidelberg Beer flat top can represents a cornerstone of Pacific Northwest breweriana, originating from Tacoma, Washington. Produced by Columbia Breweries, which later officially adopted the name Heidelberg Brewing Company, the label served as Tacoma's primary regional powerhouse alongside Seattle's Rainier and Tumwater's Olympia.

Columbia Breweries secured an important milestone in packaging history by introducing the very first canned beer distributed in the Pacific Northwest. Following that pioneering achievement, flat top cans became the brewery's standard vessel for distributing Heidelberg Beer across the West.

The can's graphic design highlights traditional Germanic typography alongside the iconic "Student Prince" imagery, paying homage to the German brewing roots established by founding brewmaster Emil Kliese. The South Sound facility grew to become one of the largest brewing facilities on the West Coast, anchoring Tacoma's historic brewing district.

For breweriana collectors, variations of the Heidelberg flat top exist across manufacturing runs. These differences include variations in manufacturer markings—such as those produced by the American Can Company and Continental Can Company—as well as adjustments in side-panel mandatory legal copy and brewery naming conventions reflecting corporate shifts. In addition, select production batches featured stamped vanity lids showcasing the brewery's emblem, making this can an enduring artifact of Pacific Northwest brewing history.
