Heileman's Old Style Light Beer Flat Top Can

Old Style Light Beer Flat Top Can

Produced by the G. Heileman Brewing Company of La Crosse, Wisconsin, this flat top can represents one of the most recognizable regional labels in the Upper Midwest. Founded in 1858 by Gottlieb Heileman and John Gund, the brewery expanded steadily over the decades, propelled largely by the enduring popularity of its flagship Old Style brand.

The can design showcases the traditional Old Style heraldic shield crest set against classic gothic typography. Rendered in the brand's signature red, white, and blue color palette, the front panel prominently features the light lager designation. Many releases from this era also incorporate references to Heileman's traditional "Kraeusening" process as well as its celebrated "God's Country" spring water heritage from the Upper Mississippi River Valley.

Packaging production was contracted through major container manufacturers of the era, including the Continental Can Company and American Can Company. For breweriana collectors, known variations exist across manufacturing runs, distinguished by differences in mandatory alcohol statements, canning plant codes, and subtle formatting adjustments on the side information panels.

During the mid-twentieth century, Heileman leveraged the fierce regional loyalty to Old Style to fuel widespread brewery acquisitions, ultimately making the La Crosse company one of the largest brewing powerhouses in the country. The Old Style Light flat top remains an essential representative piece of Wisconsin's industrial brewing history and mid-century commercial can design.
