Heileman's Old Style Light Lager Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Old Style Light Lager Tab Top Can

The Heileman's Old Style Light Lager Beer can originates from the G. Heileman Brewing Company based in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Operating along the Mississippi River, the brewery expanded from its regional origins into one of the largest brewing operations in the United States, anchored largely by the enduring popularity of its flagship Old Style brand family.

Design and Iconography

The can showcases the traditional Old Style heraldic motif, defined by a bold red, white, and blue shield emblem paired with prominent typography designating the brew as "Light Lager Beer". Graphic elements on the can frequently emphasized the brewery's traditional German kraeusening process—a double-fermentation method that Heileman highlighted across its packaging to reinforce brand identity. Many production runs from this period also prominently featured "Pure Aluminum Can" notations on the side panels.

Regional Heritage and Lore

Beyond its label design, the can reflects a notable chapter in Upper Midwest commercial culture. G. Heileman cemented significant pop-culture standing across the region, developing long-standing ties to Midwest sports and baseball culture. At its primary facility in La Crosse, the brewery famously painted its massive outdoor storage tanks with Old Style graphics to create the "World's Largest Six-Pack," transforming the brand's packaging into an iconic industrial landmark.

Collector Variations

For breweriana collectors, several variations exist across different manufacturing runs of this can. These differences appear in can manufacturer marks, bottom lid profiles, and statutory side-panel text. Additional variations stem from G. Heileman's acquisition of regional brewing facilities across the country, resulting in varying plant location listings appearing on the mandatory address lines alongside the home city of La Crosse.
