Drewrys Heritage Lager Flat Top

The Heritage Lager Beer can represents a notable chapter in mid-century American regional brewing, issued under the banner of Drewry's Ltd., U.S.A., Inc. of South Bend, Indiana. Drewry's, which originated in Canada during the late nineteenth century, established a major manufacturing footprint in the United States after Prohibition by acquiring the historic Muessel Brewing Company facility in South Bend. Over the subsequent decades, the operation expanded into one of the Midwest's prominent brewing concerns, producing a diverse portfolio of regional and specialty labels alongside its primary brand.

Heritage Lager was marketed as a traditional American lager, packaged in standard twelve-ounce steel cans featuring a dark, bold backdrop complemented by distinctive mid-century heraldic graphics and typography. As Drewry's expanded through corporate partnerships and acquisitions—incorporating production ties with facilities such as Chicago's Schoenhofen-Edelweiss—Heritage Lager was distributed across select Midwestern markets.

For breweriana collectors, the label holds enduring appeal. Known variations exist across different canning facilities and subtle text layouts, distinguishing cans filled at the South Bend plant from those distributed through other regional operations. The South Bend facility ultimately closed its doors in the 1970s amid widespread industry consolidation, leaving cans bearing the Drewry's South Bend mandatory as enduring pieces of Indiana's brewing heritage.
