Velvet Glove 16 oz Malt Liquor Can

The Heublein Velvet Glove Malt Liquor 16 Oz Tab Top Can represents a notable chapter in the history of the Theo. Hamm Brewing Company of St. Paul, Minnesota.

Corporate Background and Brand Origin

In 1965, spirits and beverage conglomerate Heublein, Inc.—widely recognized for Smirnoff vodka and prepared cocktails—acquired the Theo. Hamm Brewing Company to expand its reach in the brewing sector. Seeking to capitalize on the soaring popularity of the malt liquor segment during the late 1960s, Heublein rolled out Velvet Glove to compete directly against established national names like Colt 45 and Schlitz Malt Liquor. Extensive consumer research and test-market surveys were directed through Hamm's St. Paul headquarters to evaluate reception for the brand's upscale, smooth marketing concept.

Design and Collector Significance

The 16-ounce format provided an expanded canvas for the Velvet Glove branding, pairing bold typography with stylized crest and glove motifs. Cans identify production by the Theo. Hamm Brewing Company in St. Paul, documenting the corporate intersection where Heublein's national marketing ambition met Hamm's classic Midwestern brewing facilities.

Among breweriana collectors, large-format malt liquor containers from this period serve as significant historical artifacts. Known variations across the label line reflect subtle shifts in mandatory canning text, state alcohol statements, and can manufacturer marks. Because Heublein's ownership of Theo. Hamm was relatively short-lived before the brewing operations were sold in the 1970s, cans bearing the Heublein Velvet Glove branding stand as tangible relics of a distinct corporate transition in American brewing history.
