Hof-brau Lager Beer Flat Top Can

Maier Hof-Brau Lager Flat Top Can

The Hof-brau Lager Beer flat top was produced by the historic Maier Brewing Company of Los Angeles, California. Operating from its long-standing facility on Commercial Street in downtown Los Angeles, Maier built a reputation across the West Coast for manufacturing an expansive lineup of house labels, regional brands, and contract brews.

Design and Branding

Hof-brau was packaged to evoke the heritage of traditional Bavarian brewing. The can design features classic Old World-style blackletter typography, heraldic crests, and ornamental framing, reflecting the German-inspired aesthetic that Maier applied across several of its regional offerings.

Manufacturing and Variations

For breweriana collectors, this can presents several interesting manufacturing nuances. Known variations exist across different production runs, displaying differences in side-panel mandatory legal text, subtle shifts in metallic paint tones, and varying seam constructions, such as soldered seams and glued or cemented seams. These differences reflect Maier's practice of utilizing multiple container suppliers and updating canning line technology throughout the brand's run.

Collector Legacy

During the era when industrialist Paul Kalmanovitz owned and operated Maier Brewing, the facility supplied an array of value-priced and specialty labels to California markets before West Coast brewing operations consolidated. The Hof-brau flat top remains an enduring artifact of Southern California's brewing heritage and a staple for collectors of Los Angeles breweriana.
