Holihan's Pilsener Beer 12 Oz Zip/Tab Top Can

Holihan's Pilsener Tab Top Can

The Holihan's Pilsener Beer 12 oz can represents an important artifact from the Diamond Spring Brewery of Lawrence, Massachusetts. Diamond Spring Brewery was established by the Holihan family—brothers James, Joseph, and Charles—who capitalized on the natural freshwater spring situated on their South Lawrence property. Although the family had established roots in the regional beverage and distilling trade dating back to the nineteenth century, the Diamond Spring facility served as the primary production home for the Holihan brand for several decades.

Can Design and Collector Details

As the flagship lager of Diamond Spring, Holihan's Pilsener featured bold, clean graphic work intended to stand out on regional retail shelves. The label design prominently features the classic Holihan's script across the face of the can, paired with traditional brewery heraldry and clean mid-century layout aesthetics.

Variations of this particular can exist across the hobby, with differences primarily found in the metallic sheen of the paint background, subtle text rearrangements, and mandatory brewery disclaimer lines.

Industrial and Regional Significance

Lawrence, Massachusetts was historically celebrated as one of the country's most vital textile mill cities along the Merrimack River. Diamond Spring Brewery was among the few major commercial breweries to emerge from the industrial hub, making Holihan breweriana particularly prized among New England regional specialists and Merrimack Valley historical collectors. Following the closure of the Lawrence facility, the brand was later contract brewed in other parts of the Northeast, but cans displaying the original Diamond Spring Lawrence, Mass. imprint remain the core focus for local historical collections.
