Hudepohl Chevy Ale Crowntainer

Hudepohl Chevy Ale Profile

The Hudepohl Chevy Ale Crowntainer is one of the most sought-after cans hailing from the Hudepohl Brewing Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. Manufactured by Crown Cork & Seal, this container showcases the bold graphics associated with Hudepohl's specialty ale line.

Design and Iconography

The can features a rich blue background centered around a classic horseshoe emblem and bold lettering spelling out "Chevy Ale". While Hudepohl's flagship lager cans of the same era predominantly utilized red motifs or wartime olive-drab finishes, Chevy Ale was distinguished by its distinctive blue palette and equestrian-influenced motif.

The "Chevy" Moniker

A frequent point of interest among breweriana historians is the use of the brand name "Chevy". While modern audiences often associate the name with the automotive brand, Hudepohl's naming convention is linked to historic British traditions and the ballad of Chevy Chase. Because ales were traditionally associated with British brewing styles, the brewery adopted the moniker to evoke old-world brewing heritage.

Lineage and Variations

Chevy Ale originally appeared in cone top formats before being packaged in Crowntainers, and the brand later transitioned through post-war reformulations under names such as "Old 85" and "Chevy 85 Ale" in flat top cans.

Among collectors, variations of this Crowntainer exist, exhibiting differences in state-specific mandatory text, alcohol content statements, and tax markings. Because ale production was significantly lower in volume than mainstream lager output in the Midwest during this period, surviving examples of this can remain considerably scarcer than the brewery's primary lager releases.
