Hudepohl Pure Lager Beer Crowntainer

Cincinnati's Wartime Crowntainer

Manufactured by Crown Cork & Seal for the Hudepohl Brewing Company of Cincinnati, Ohio, the Hudepohl Pure Lager Beer Crowntainer holds a prominent place in mid-twentieth-century breweriana history. Operating out of its historic facilities in Cincinnati, Hudepohl packaged its flagship lager in this format during an era of significant industrial change.

One of the most notable historical chapters involving this can centers on the World War II era. Hudepohl produced olive-drab versions of the Pure Lager Crowntainer specifically for United States military personnel stationed overseas. Filled and sealed at the Cincinnati brewery, these cans were marked with tax-exempt designations for military distribution. Cases were packed in straw and shipped to active theaters, with wartime accounts recording that crates of Hudepohl cans were air-dropped by parachute to troops stationed on islands throughout the Pacific.

Beyond military contracts, Hudepohl produced Pure Lager Crowntainers for the civilian market. Label variations exist across the production run, featuring different dominant color schemes, mandatory tax wording, and varying alcohol content statements. Due to material conservation in the post-war transition, civilian graphics were occasionally applied directly over unused military olive-drab cans, resulting in paint-over examples that document the manufacturing adaptations of the time.

Today, the Hudepohl Pure Lager Beer Crowntainer remains a sought-after piece of Ohio brewing history and a classic artifact of wartime container manufacturing.
