Hull's Cream Ale Flat Top Can

Hull's Cream Ale Flat Top Overview

The Hull's Cream Ale flat top represents an important piece of Connecticut brewing heritage, originating from The Hull Brewing Company located in New Haven, Connecticut. Established by Colonel William Hull, the brewery stood as a cornerstone of the Elm City's brewing landscape along Congress Avenue, eventually holding distinction as the state's last surviving legacy commercial brewery.

Design and Visual Appeal

The can features the recognizable flowing cursive "Hull's" script logo positioned alongside prominent cream ale labeling. Designed with crisp contrast and mid-century aesthetic sensibilities, the packaging exemplifies the regional graphic styling prevalent before major national brands consolidated the American market. Its bold shelf presence makes it a standout entry among vintage New England cans.

Known Variations

Collectors recognize several variations of the Hull's Cream Ale flat top. Early issues feature the required Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statement alongside side-panel opening instructions. Later versions moved away from instructional panels and eliminated the tax statement in accordance with changing federal regulations. Additional variations feature subtle differences in text arrangement, including versions that incorporate specific distributor credits, such as New York distributor markings above the mandatory statements.

Collector Significance

Hull's was deeply integrated into the local culture of New Haven. Because Hull was the premier Connecticut brewery for generations, its canned products are regarded as essential centerpieces for collectors focusing on Connecticut, New England, and Northeast regional breweriana.
