International Iroquois Beer 12 Oz Zip Top Can

Buffalo's Iroquois Zip Top Era

Produced at the Pratt Street facility in Buffalo, New York, by International Breweries, Inc., the International Iroquois Beer 12 Oz Zip Top Can represents a notable chapter in Western New York breweriana. International Breweries acquired the venerable Iroquois Beverage Corporation during the mid-1950s, consolidating several regional plants while keeping the home market anchored in Buffalo.

During this operational period, the brewery packaged its flagship Iroquois Beer across changing can formats. While flat top cans were heavily produced across earlier production runs, the zip top iteration emerged as canning lines modernized in the 1960s. Because International Breweries underwent corporate restructuring and eventual closure, the production window for this particular zip top design was comparatively brief, making it a sought-after piece for regional can collectors.

The can features mid-century lithography that incorporates classic Iroquois iconography alongside the corporate designation of International Breweries, Inc. on the mandatory text panel. The brewery utilized major can suppliers such as Continental Can Company and American Can Company, leading to distinct manufacturer marks and subtle color variations across surviving examples. For collectors focused on Upstate New York brewing history, this can serves as a key artifact from the final era of independent brewing in Buffalo.
