Following the successful 1962 regional test marketing of self-opening 12 oz cans, Pittsburgh Brewing Company rapidly expanded the format to larger volume containers. In early 1963, Pittsburgh Brewing introduced this 16 oz version, making it the first brewery in the industry to market beer in a pint-sized tab top can.

The can's graphic design reflected the brewery's aggressive promotion of the new lid format. Early production runs featured slogans such as "New Easy Open Snap Top". As competitors raced to introduce their own opening tabs, Pittsburgh Brewing revised the can graphics to proclaim "No. 1 With The Snap Top". The company fiercely protected this marketing angle, going so far as to file an unfair competition lawsuit against local rival Duquesne Brewing in May 1963 over the use of the "Snap Top" phrase.
