Iron City Beer 16 Oz Tab Top Can

Pioneer of the Pint Tab Top

The Iron City Beer 16 oz tab top can holds a notable place in breweriana history as part of the packaging revolution spearheaded by Pittsburgh Brewing Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Working alongside the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa), Pittsburgh Brewing helped pioneer self-opening beer cans and subsequently became the first brewery to introduce a tab top on a 16-ounce pint container.

The commercial launch of this can format transformed the brewing landscape. Pittsburgh Brewing took aggressive measures to protect its commercial momentum and packaging identity, going so far as to initiate a lawsuit against local rival Duquesne Brewing over the market use of the trademarked term "Snap Top".

Throughout its production history, the can appeared with various text and layout adjustments. Early issues frequently highlighted the revolutionary closure with slogans such as "New Easy Open Snap Top" or "No. 1 With The Snap Top" across the body. Subsequent printings featured graphic variations in brewery heraldry, side-panel mandatory text, and lid stampings.

For collectors, the 16-ounce tall format provides an expansive display of Pittsburgh's signature red, white, and gold branding, commemorating a landmark era in twentieth-century can manufacturing.
