Iron City Beer Cone Top Can

Iron City Cone Top Can History

Brewed by Pittsburgh Brewing Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Iron City Beer cone top represents a major chapter in the brewery's storied packaging legacy. Originating in the Lawrenceville neighborhood, Pittsburgh Brewing Company established Iron City as a cornerstone brand throughout the Mid-Atlantic and American industrial heartland.

Manufactured in the high-profile format by the Continental Can Company, the can's lithography features bold typography, the Iron City nameplate, and the classic shield emblem. The design utilizes the brand's traditional red, white, and gold color scheme, creating an unmistakable look associated with the steelmaking region.

Different variations of this cone top exist across its production lifespan. Notable differences appear in the mandatory regulatory markings, with versions featuring the "Internal Revenue Tax Paid" (IRTP) statement alongside later examples produced after the federal marking mandate was discontinued. Additional variations can be identified through differences in state-specific alcohol percentage statements, variations in bottom lid profiles, subtle phrasing updates in the mandatory brewery legal text, and minor shifts in back-panel graphics.

Pittsburgh Brewing Company was long recognized for its pioneering role in metal beverage packaging. This can remains an essential focal point for collectors of Pennsylvania breweriana and early American steel cans.
