Iron City Beer Cone Top Can

Pittsburgh's Iron City Cone Top

Manufactured for the Pittsburgh Brewing Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Iron City Beer cone top can represents an important chapter in Pennsylvania's industrial brewing heritage. Established in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, the brewery grew into one of the largest brewing operations in the region and was an early adopter of canned beer packaging.

The can features classic Iron City graphic branding, prominently displaying bold red, white, and black heraldic styling alongside required regulatory panels. Produced as a high-profile container by the Continental Can Company, the design allowed the brewery to package beer using its existing bottling machinery without costly assembly line conversions.

Among breweriana collectors, Iron City cone tops are known for multiple variations distributed across different production runs. These variations include differences in mandatory labeling, such as Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) designations, distinct alcohol statement formats, state tax stamps, and adjustments to Continental Can Company patent marks.

Pittsburgh Brewing Company went on to achieve several notable packaging milestones throughout the twentieth century, making their cone top containers enduring favorites for collectors of Western Pennsylvania brewing memorabilia.
