Iron City Beer Cone Top Can

Pittsburgh's Iron City Cone Top

The Iron City Beer cone top can represents an iconic piece of breweriana from the Pittsburgh Brewing Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As one of the preeminent regional brewing powerhouses of the era, the brewery utilized high-profile containers produced by the Continental Can Company to package its flagship Iron City brand.

Design and Lithography

The can features Iron City's classic branding, distinguished by bold typography and a striking palette typically centered around deep red, white, and black. Known variations exist across different manufacturing runs, reflecting changes in corporate branding and evolving legal requirements. Some examples carry the "Internal Revenue Tax Paid" (IRTP) designation, while others bear state-specific tax stamps on the lid or body. Minor differences in mandatory alcohol content notices, manufacturer marks, and central insignia detailing also distinguish separate production batches.

Historical Context and Collectibility

Pittsburgh Brewing Company, formed at the end of the nineteenth century through the merger of numerous local brewing operations, maintained Iron City as the cornerstone of its regional portfolio. The cone top container played a major role in regional distribution throughout Western Pennsylvania and surrounding industrial markets. Because of the brewery's deep roots in American brewing history and the diverse lithography details found across production runs, the Iron City cone top remains a highly sought-after centerpiece among regional can collectors.
