Iron City Draft 12 Oz Zip/Tab Top Can

Pittsburgh's Historic Draft Can

Produced by the Pittsburgh Brewing Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Iron City Draft 12 oz zip/tab top can stands as an important artifact in twentieth-century breweriana. Pittsburgh Brewing Company played a pioneering role in the container packaging revolution, collaborating closely with local industrial giants like Alcoa to reshape how beer was packaged and distributed.

Iron City was at the forefront of the self-opening can movement and stood among the earliest breweries to commercially package draft-style beer in cans. The Iron City Draft can features bold regional branding that prominently displays the brewery's storied heritage, incorporating traditional typography and heraldic elements that resonated strongly with the steel-working communities of Western Pennsylvania.

For breweriana enthusiasts, this can reflects a transformative era when regional powerhouse breweries competed aggressively for shelf space by advertising draught freshness in portable containers. Known variations exist across different manufacturing runs, showcasing differences in canning plant text, mandatory tax stamps, and lid stamping instructions. Because Pittsburgh Brewing Company was an industry leader in modern can innovation, these cans remain staple centerpieces in collections dedicated to Pennsylvania brewing history and the evolution of mid-century metal beverage packaging.
