Jax Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Jackson Brewing's Iconic Jax Can

The Jax Beer 12 oz tab top can represents a defining era for the Jackson Brewing Company of New Orleans, Louisiana. Established in 1890 by Lawrence Fabacher at its landmark French Quarter facility on Decatur Street, Jackson Brewing grew into the largest independent brewery in the American South and was one of the few New Orleans breweries to survive Prohibition.

For many years, Jackson Brewing shared the Jax moniker with Florida's Jacksonville Brewing Company under a legal territorial agreement. In 1954, Jackson Brewing acquired full rights to the brand, initiating an era of widespread distribution throughout the South supported by high-profile regional marketing campaigns.

The can design prominently displays the bold "Jax" typography alongside traditional heraldic imagery associated with the brewery. For collectors, known variations exist across production runs, featuring differences in side-panel mandatory text, seam designs, metallic finishes, and regional tax stamps.

Original New Orleans canning runs ended when Jackson Brewing closed its doors in 1974, after which the brand rights were acquired by the Pearl Brewing Company. While the historic French Quarter brewhouse was later repurposed as a landmark retail and entertainment destination, the can remains a classic artifact of the city's commercial brewing history.
