Jax Beer Flat Top Can

New Orleans Jax Flat Top Can

Produced by the historic Jackson Brewing Company in New Orleans, Louisiana, the Jax Beer flat top represents the flagship can from what became the largest brewery in the American South. Situated along Decatur Street in the French Quarter overlooking Jackson Square, the brewery drew its name directly from General Andrew Jackson.

Graphic Design and Motifs

The can's visual presentation centers around bold lettering paired with rich red, white, and metallic gold accents. Prominently featured across editions is the iconic silhouette of Andrew Jackson mounted on a rearing horse, an illustration referencing the famous bronze monument in Jackson Square. Collectors encounter variations across different production runs, reflecting alterations in slogans such as "Best Beer In Town" or "Special Pale Beer," differences in mandatory brewery texts, and commemorative anniversary crests celebrating major brewery milestones.

Trademark Battles and Regional Reach

The history printed onto the Jax can is tied to notable legal and regional developments. During the mid-1930s, Jackson Brewing Company entered a high-profile trademark dispute with the Jacksonville Brewing Company of Florida, which was also distributing beer under the "Jax" label. The court battle resulted in a territorial compromise that granted the New Orleans brewery exclusive distribution rights west of Mobile, Alabama, while the Florida company retained territory to the east. This regional division remained until the mid-1950s, when Jackson Brewing Company purchased the full trademark rights.

As an enduring artifact of Gulf Coast brewing history, this New Orleans staple remains a centerpiece in Southern breweriana collections.
