Jax Draft Flat Top Can

Jackson Brewing Jax Draft Can

The Jax Draft Flat Top Can was produced by the historic Jackson Brewing Company in New Orleans, Louisiana. Operating from its landmark brewhouse along Decatur Street directly facing Jackson Square in the French Quarter, Jackson Brewing Company grew to become the largest independent brewing operation in the American South.

Brewery History and Brand Heritage

Jackson Brewing Company was originally established in 1890 and took its name from General Andrew Jackson. The brewery weathered Prohibition by producing soft drinks and near-beer before returning to standard production. The company famously defended and solidified its brand territory following a legal dispute with Florida's Jacksonville Brewing Company, eventually acquiring full rights to the "Jax" trademark.

The Jax Draft Label

The Jax Draft label was introduced as breweries began promoting packaged draft-style beer to compete against expanding national competitors. The can artwork prominently displays the bold "JAX" lettering paired with the "Draft Beer" designation, set against mid-century graphics featuring the Jackson Brewing Company New Orleans mandatory text.

Collector Significance and Variations

Among breweriana collectors, the Jax Draft can holds a notable place within Southern packaging history. Because the industry rapidly transitioned toward tab-opening containers during the era of draft-branded cans, flat top issues of this specific label experienced shorter overall runs than standard flagship Jax cans. Known variations exist across different manufacturing runs, featuring slight shifts in typography placement, differing can manufacturer marks, and subtle changes in mandatory legal lines. Today, it remains an essential Southern artifact for collectors specializing in New Orleans brewing history and Gulf Coast memorabilia.
