Karlsbrau Old Time Beer Cone Top Can

Duluth's Karlsbrau Cone Top

The Karlsbrau Old Time Beer Cone Top Can is a prized piece of Upper Midwest breweriana, produced for the Duluth Brewing & Malting Company of Duluth, Minnesota. Karlsbrau served as the flagship label for the historic brewing operation, which was located in Duluth's West End (now known as Lincoln Park) and represented one of the major industrial brewing pillars of northern Minnesota alongside contemporaries like Fitger's and Peoples Brewing.

Graphic Design and Visual Appeal

The can features traditional Bavarian-inspired branding centered around the bold "Karlsbrau" lettering paired with the prominent "Old Time Beer" moniker. The artwork reflects mid-century design trends that highlighted heritage and pre-Prohibition craftsmanship to appeal to local tavern patrons and retail consumers.

Collector Notes and Variations

Among breweriana enthusiasts, this can is celebrated for its regional historical significance and several notable variations:

• Mandatory Legend: The cans display mandatory text attributing brewing and packaging to the Duluth Brewing & Malting Co. in Duluth, Minnesota.
• Regulatory and Caption Differences: Known variations exist showing differences in alcohol tax notices and state-specific mandatory captions, such as variations with "STRONG" markings or Internal Revenue statements.
• Lithography Variations: Multiple print runs produced slight differences in paint coloration and bottom rim profiles across manufacturing batches.

Historical Significance

Following the decline and eventual closure of independent regional breweries throughout the Upper Midwest, containers bearing the Duluth Brewing & Malting label became sought-after artifacts of Lake Superior's industrial brewing era. Today, the Karlsbrau cone top is a prominent display piece for collectors focusing on Minnesota brewing history and classic mid-century canned breweriana.
