Katz Premium Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Katz Premium from Associated

The Katz Premium Beer 12 oz tab top can was packaged under the Associated Brewing Company name associated with operations in South Bend, Indiana. The brand carries a recognized connection to regional contract brewing and retail distribution, most notably linked to the Katz Drug Store chain founded by brothers Ike and Mike Katz in Kansas City, Missouri. Known for pioneering widespread discount merchandising throughout the Midwest, the chain contracted regional breweries to produce private-label packaged goods, including canned beer lines.

The container prominently showcases the Katz brand identity, which historically integrated stylized typography and the chain's trademark black cat emblem. Associated Brewing Company maintained several production facilities across the Midwest, and cans associated with the South Bend location highlight this era of multi-plant brewing operations.

Among collectors, known variations exist regarding mandatory text layouts, city listings, and lid designs. The can stands as a notable example of mid-twentieth-century Midwestern commercial enterprise, illustrating the crossover between regional retail powerhouses and large-scale contract brewing.
